Relationship therapy

Relationship therapy helps people understand and change recurring patterns of conflict, distance or misunderstanding in an important relationship. Partners, family members or other people may be supported to express needs, listen differently and work with differences without assigning blame. The therapist creates a balanced space in which each person's experience can be heard.

What sessions may involve

Identifying interaction cycles, practising listening and expression, and discussing the needs and boundaries of each person.

What it may suit

May suit partners or other close adults facing conflict, distance, change or repeated misunderstandings.

Delivery and fit

The therapist should explain neutrality, confidentiality and safety. Joint work may not be suitable where there is coercion, fear or abuse.

Evidence and uncertainty

Relationship interventions have evidence for some relationship difficulties, but outcomes rely on context, safety and each person's engagement.
