Cognitive analytic therapy (CAT)

Cognitive analytic therapy combines attention to thoughts, emotions and behaviour with an exploration of the relationship patterns that shape them. The therapist and client work together to map repeating cycles, understand how they developed and identify new ways of responding. CAT is structured, time-limited and highly collaborative.

What sessions may involve

Creating a shared written map of repeating patterns, using letters or diagrams, and planning exits from unhelpful cycles.

What it may suit

May suit recurring relationship patterns, self-criticism or difficulties that feel connected to past and present relationships.

Delivery and fit

CAT is commonly time-limited and structured. Ask how letters, diagrams and endings will be handled in online sessions.

Evidence and uncertainty

CAT has a developing research base; its suitability depends on the person's needs, goals and available specialist provision.
