Ongoing Support
Mental health is not a problem to be fixed once and forgotten. Real, lasting change comes from building a consistent therapeutic relationship over time, understanding yourself more deeply, developing robust coping skills, and having a safe, dedicated space for whatever life brings. Therapy England supports both short-term focused work and long-term ongoing therapy.
What this means for you
Continuity with the same therapist
Building trust with one therapist over time is one of the most powerful factors in therapy outcomes. We prioritise therapeutic continuity.
Support through all of life's seasons
From acute crises to long-term personal growth, your therapist knows your history and can support you through whatever comes next.
Flexible session frequency
Weekly, fortnightly, or monthly, the frequency of your sessions can be adjusted as your needs change.
Long-term mental health management
For conditions like bipolar disorder, recurrent depression, or complex PTSD, ongoing therapy is a key component of staying well over time.
Frequently asked questions
- How long should I expect to be in therapy?
- It depends on what you're working on. Specific phobias or acute insomnia might be addressed in 6-8 sessions. Complex trauma, personality difficulties, or long-standing patterns often benefit from years of consistent work. There is no single answer.
- Will my therapist discharge me before I'm ready?
- Therapy England does not operate a fixed number of sessions. Ending therapy is a collaborative decision made between you and your therapist based on your goals and progress.
- Can I take a break from therapy and return?
- Yes. Life circumstances change. You can pause therapy and return to your therapist when you're ready, subject to their availability.
- What's the difference between weekly and monthly sessions?
- Weekly sessions are better for acute difficulties and building momentum. Fortnightly or monthly sessions work well for ongoing support once acute symptoms have stabilised.
